Background

This project was originally part of an entrepreneurial design course where Industrial Design and Communication Design Students teamed up to design, brand, and make a small batch (15 units) of one product to sell at the opening day for ADAAPT, which is a storefront by Findlay Market in Cincinnati dedicated to selling creations from DAAP students and alumni.

After selling out in two days with people wanting more, I was inspired to start my own business, Heart to Heartwood, where I design, make, and sell a line of wood and metal home products, focusing on quality and keeping it 100% real. There is more info on Heart to Heartwood following this project.

Project Brief

Since the sale at ADAAPT was a few weeks before the holidays, our team placed a strong emphasis on giftability as well as making an item that would not need a dedicated space in a home like a piece of furniture or a wall decoration. Most of our customers would be weekend shoppers who just happened to stop by and might make a purchase on impulse.

Our team agreed on designing a tabletop clock, but this came with new challenges since people have access to the time and beyond with smartphones that are always on hand. How can we design a relevant analog clock? This question led us to analyze what makes antiques desirable in a throw-away world and research aesthetic/consumer trends.

How can a design bridge the gap between antique qualities and modern aesthetics?

Final Deliverables

Coming Soon . . .

After this studio project, I expressed interest in continuing to make and sell clocks, further perfecting their design and sharing them with the world. I received a scholarship and started Heart to Heartwood, a functional home decor brand focused on heirloom-quality products with unique designs.

Current Goal:

•  60 clocks, 3 fresh metal and wood combinations
Future:
•  Lamps
•  Desk / Organizational Products
•  Limited Edition Products using limited supply wood with a story
